Cemprotec 32: Electric, Magnetic and Powerline Signal Meter

The Cemprotec 32 tests three things at the same time: the electric fields and magnetic fields given off by your home's wiring and appliances, and the broadband powerline communication (PLC) signals that travel along your electrical system. Three LED displays show the level of each, and an audio function lets you hear the PLC signals. It is designed and made by EPE Conseil, and it replaced the ESI 22. Browse our full range of EMF meters to compare it with other options.

What the Cemprotec 32 Measures

  • Electric fields: 10 Hz to 5 kHz, from household installations and high-voltage power lines.
  • Magnetic fields: 10 Hz to 5 kHz, from transformers and electrical installations.
  • Powerline communication (PLC) and dirty electricity signals: 1.6 MHz to 68 MHz, with acoustic analysis.

Standard Mode and Full PLC Mode

In standard mode, the Cemprotec 32 shows average values on three separate LED bars, one each for electric fields, magnetic fields and PLC signals. Full PLC mode shows peak values on a higher-resolution LED scale for a closer look at PLC signals. The manual includes a table giving the level that each LED represents, and the audio function helps you identify PLC sources by ear.

Check Powerline Adapters and PLC Signals

PLC signals come from devices that send data over your electrical wiring, such as powerline networking adapters and some smart meters. The Cemprotec 32 lets you check whether a powerline adapter is transmitting, including at night when it should be switched off, and find where PLC signals are strongest in your home.

Find Fields From Wiring, Appliances and Power Lines

Walk through your home with the meter to find where electric and magnetic fields are highest: near wiring, appliances, transformers and electrical panels. It is also useful for checking a home before you buy, rent or move in, and it is easy to take with you when you travel.

Compact and Lightweight

The meter measures 7.0 x 2.0 x 1.3 inches and weighs just 3.2 oz. A 9V battery is included, so it is ready to use as soon as it arrives.

Cemprotec 32 vs Cemprotec 31, 33 and 34

EPE Conseil makes four Cemprotec meters, and we sell all of them. The number tells you what the meter measures:

  • Cemprotec 32 (this meter): low-frequency electric and magnetic fields, plus powerline communication (PLC) and dirty electricity signals. It does not measure radio frequency such as WiFi or cell signals.
  • Cemprotec 31: radio frequency only, from 1 MHz to 10 GHz, on a 24-LED scale.
  • Cemprotec 33 and Cemprotec 34: radio frequency plus low-frequency electric and magnetic fields, in one meter. They do not measure PLC signals.

In short: choose the 32 if your concern is wiring, appliances and powerline signals, the 31 if radio frequency is all you want to check, and the 33 or 34 if you want radio frequency and low-frequency fields in one meter. See the Specifications tab for a side-by-side table. If you want numerical readings, see the TriField TF2, or the Dirty Electricity Line EMI Meter for a millivolt reading of the noise on your wiring.
