TriField® EMF Meter Model TF2: 3-in-1 Electromagnetic Field Meter
The TriField® EMF Meter Model TF2, made by AlphaLab, Inc., measures the three main types of EMF in one handheld device: AC magnetic fields (gaussmeter), AC electric fields and RF/microwave power density. It is a simple way to find out how much EMF you are exposed to at home, at work or on the move, and a popular first meter for anyone starting out. Browse our full range of EMF meters to compare options.
What the TriField TF2 Measures
- Magnetic mode: 40 Hz to 100 kHz, 0.1 to 100.0 milligauss (mG), with a resolution of 0.1 mG. Readings are 3-axis, so you get a quick, true magnitude reading whatever the orientation of the meter.
- Electric mode: 40 Hz to 100 kHz, 1 to 1000 volts per meter (V/m), with a resolution of 1 V/m.
- RF mode: 20 MHz to 6 GHz, 0.001 to 19.999 milliwatts per square meter (mW/m²), with a resolution of 0.001 mW/m².
TriField TF2 Standard vs Weighted Mode
As well as standard AC modes, the TF2 has a frequency-weighted mode that scales the magnetic and electric readings to reflect the currents each field produces inside the human body. If only power-line frequency is present, standard and weighted readings are the same. If higher frequencies are present, the weighted reading is higher, so comparing the two tells you whether those higher frequencies are in the room.

What Can the TriField TF2 Detect?
- Mobile phone and cell tower RF radiation
- Smart meter RF radiation
- WiFi router and Bluetooth RF radiation
- Household appliances that emit EMF, such as laptops, refrigerators and circuit breaker boxes
- Overhead power lines and transformers
- EMF inside aircraft and motor vehicles
- Microwave oven leakage
- Wiring in walls (location and EMF)
- EMF from plumbing pipes used as grounding
TriField TF2 RF Range: Cell Towers, WiFi and 5G
The RF mode covers 20 MHz to 6 GHz, which includes cell phones, cell towers, WiFi, Bluetooth and the sub-6 GHz bands used by most 5G. It does not measure millimeter wave 5G, which is above 6 GHz. The TF2 is also best at measuring RF close to the source and is not suited to detecting ambient radio frequency. For reliable high-frequency measurements, we recommend the Cemprotec 33 or the FM5 Path, our most reliable high-frequency detector, and the FM5 Path Complete reads 24 to 32 GHz for millimeter wave 5G.
How to Use the TriField TF2
Turn the dial to the mode you want, hold the bottom half of the meter, and point it away from your body towards the item or area you want to check. As you move towards a source the reading rises, and as you move away it falls. Use the audio alert to home in on the source.
How to Read Your TriField Meter
The large LCD shows a digital reading that updates several times a second, with a bar graph so you can see changes at a glance. For magnetic and electric fields, compare the standard and weighted readings. For pulsed signals such as phones and WiFi routers, read the peak measurement, because these devices transmit in short bursts.

A TriField meter is a handheld EMF detector and reader made by AlphaLab, Inc. The TriField® EMF Meter Model TF2 measures three types of EMF: AC magnetic fields (40 Hz to 100 kHz, 0.1 to 100 mG), AC electric fields (40 Hz to 100 kHz, 1 to 1000 V/m) and RF/microwave power density (20 MHz to 6 GHz, 0.001 to 19.999 mW/m²). It is used to check EMF at home, at work and on the move.
The TriField® TF2 is an AC gaussmeter, AC electric field meter and RF power density meter in a single handheld unit. It combines everything you need for fast EMF measurements, and it is made in the USA by AlphaLab, Inc.
Magnetic: 3-axis, 40 Hz to 100 kHz, 0.1 to 100.0 mG, ±4% at 50/60 Hz. Electric: single axis, 40 Hz to 100 kHz, 1 to 1000 V/m, ±5% at 50/60 Hz. RF: single axis, 20 MHz to 6 GHz, 0.001 to 19.999 mW/m², ±20% at 1 GHz. It runs on a 9V battery for more than 20 hours and measures about 5.25 x 2.75 x 1.5 inches. See the Specifications tab for the full table.
Turn the dial to the mode you want, hold the bottom half of the meter and point it away from your body towards the item or area you want to check. Readings rise as you move towards a source and fall as you move away. The audio alert helps you pinpoint the source.
The LCD shows a digital reading that updates several times a second, plus a bar graph for changes at a glance. For magnetic and electric fields, compare standard and weighted readings. For pulsed signals such as phones and WiFi routers, read the peak measurement.
Magnetic readings are accurate to ±4% at 50/60 Hz, electric readings to ±5% at 50/60 Hz, and RF readings to ±20% at 1 GHz. That is accurate enough to find sources, compare rooms and check whether a reading falls after you make a change.
Weighted mode scales the magnetic and electric readings to reflect the currents each field produces inside the human body. If only power-line frequency is present, standard and weighted readings are the same. If higher frequencies are present, the weighted reading is higher.
Yes. RF mode covers WiFi routers, Bluetooth devices, cell phones, cell towers and smart meters. Point the meter at the source and read the peak measurement, because these devices transmit in short pulses.
It detects signals up to 6 GHz, which includes the sub-6 GHz bands used by most 5G networks, as well as 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth. It does not measure millimeter wave 5G, which is above 6 GHz. For that, choose the FM5 Path Complete, which reads 24 to 32 GHz.
The TF2 is best at measuring RF close to the source and is not suited to detecting ambient radio frequency. For reliable high-frequency measurements, we recommend the Cemprotec 33 or the FM5 Path, our most reliable high-frequency detector.
Yes. Hold the meter near laptops, refrigerators, circuit breaker boxes and other appliances to measure their AC magnetic and electric fields. Readings rise as you move closer and fall as you move away.
Yes. The magnetic and electric modes measure the AC fields from overhead power lines and transformers.
The TF2's magnetic and electric modes cover 40 Hz to 100 kHz, which includes the 50/60 Hz power-line fields commonly called ELF fields, and extends up into the kilohertz range.
No. The TF2 measures fields in the air, not the electrical noise on your wiring. To measure dirty electricity, plug in our Dirty Electricity Line EMI Meter.
The TriField® EMF Meter Model TF2 is $199.99 at EMF Protection USA.
It measures all three types of EMF in one device, its magnetic readings are 3-axis so orientation does not matter, it has a weighted mode for human-body currents, and peak hold and an audio alert make it easy to find sources. It is also made in the USA.
It runs on a 9V alkaline battery, which is included, with a low-battery indicator. Battery life is more than 20 hours with the backlight off, or more than 12 hours with the backlight on.
When the low-battery indicator shows, replace the battery with a fresh 9V alkaline battery. The instruction manual shows where the battery compartment is.
The TriField® TF2 comes with a hard carry case and a 9V alkaline battery, so it is ready to use as soon as it arrives.
The meter measures about 5.25 x 2.75 x 1.5 inches and weighs about 0.5 lb (8 oz), small enough to carry in a bag or pocket, and it travels in its hard carry case.
Meters are non-returnable, so please check the specifications and what you want to measure before you order. If you are unsure whether the TF2 is the right meter for you, contact us for free advice before you buy.
