Dirty Electricity Meter: Plug-In Line EMI Monitor for Home Use
The Dirty Electricity Line EMI Meter measures dirty electricity, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) riding on your mains wiring, in your home or workplace. Just plug it into a wall outlet and the OLED screen shows the AC voltage and the noise voltage in millivolts (mV). A built-in speaker gets louder as interference increases, so you can hear the difference as you move around.
How the Line EMI Meter Works
The meter displays total line noise in millivolts peak to peak (mVp-p) across the 10 kHz to 10 MHz range, on single-phase AC power lines. The speaker plays the sound of the interference, which helps you identify the source: an AM or shortwave radio signal sounds different from a motor or an electric arc. Plug it into different outlets around the house to see how the noise varies from circuit to circuit.
Test Your Dirty Electricity Filters
Dirty electricity can interfere with sensitive electronics, and the more of it on your wiring, the more EMF is likely to be present around it. Plug in the meter with and without your dirty electricity filters to see what difference they make. Because the meter measures noise across a very wide range, and filters usually target part of that range, use it to compare readings before and after rather than expecting a reading of zero.
Easy to Use
- Plug into any outlet to check the nearby wiring
- No battery needed
- Detachable 0.8 m (about 2.6 ft) two-core power cord included
- Works on single-phase AC power lines
Small and Compact
The meter measures 5.2 x 3.6 x 1.6 inches and weighs 150 g (about 5.3 oz), so it is easy to carry from room to room.
Pair It With Filters
Use the meter to find the outlets with the most noise, then add plug-in dirty electricity filters where they are needed and measure again. To learn more, read our guide to minimizing dirty electricity in your home.

It is a plug-in meter that measures the electromagnetic interference (dirty electricity) on your home wiring and shows it as line noise in millivolts. It needs no battery, and a built-in speaker plays the interference so you can identify the source.
Plug the meter into a wall outlet and read the display. There is no setup and no battery. Test outlets in different rooms, since readings can vary from circuit to circuit, and repeat at different times of day because devices switch on and off. To find a source, unplug or switch off one device at a time and note whether the reading drops.
The speaker plays the sound of the interference on your wiring, and gets louder as the interference increases. That sound can help you identify sources, such as AM or shortwave radio signals, motors and electric arcs.
Readings below 25 mV are the target. Between 25 and 50 mV is marginal and worth improving where you can. Above 50 mV, you should take steps to bring the level down.
It shows line noise in millivolts peak to peak (mVp-p, differential), from 0.1 to 1999.9 mV, across 10 kHz to 10 MHz. It also shows the AC voltage of the outlet.
Plug the meter into an outlet and note the reading. Add a dirty electricity filter on that circuit, wait a moment, and read the meter again. A lower reading shows the noise on that circuit has dropped. The meter measures noise across a very wide range, so the reading may not fall to zero even when a filter is working.
Not necessarily. High readings usually come from devices plugged into the circuit, or from interference entering from outside, rather than faulty wiring. Use the meter to narrow down which devices contribute, and retest after each change. If you are concerned about the wiring itself, have a licensed electrician inspect it.
Mostly electronics that switch or convert power, such as LED lights, dimmers, chargers, computers and solar inverters. See our guide to minimizing dirty electricity in your home for more.
Line noise accuracy is ±8% from 20 kHz to 2 MHz, and within a factor of 2 from 10 kHz to 10 MHz. Voltage readings are accurate to ±1 VAC.
No. It measures dirty electricity (line noise) on your wiring only. To measure magnetic fields, electric fields and RF from WiFi and cell phones, pair it with a general-purpose meter such as the TriField TF2.
It operates on 85 to 300 VAC at 50/60 Hz, and reads outlet voltage from 85 to 250 VAC.
Yes. Household power in the US and Canada is 120V at 60 Hz, which is within the meter's operating range.
The meter is designed for single-phase AC power lines, which is what most homes use.
No. It is powered by the outlet it is plugged into.
The meter and a detachable 0.8 m (about 2.6 ft) two-core power cord.
