Are the Radiation Levels in Your Home Too High?

It seems like everyone these days is adding new technology to their houses. In fact, the average American household has 11 connected devices! Although you use these devices in your daily life, you probably have never stopped to think about the potentially harmful effects they can have on your body. Almost everything in our lives emits different degrees of radiation, but too much radiation does more harm than good. Read on to learn more about what radiation is and how the radiation levels in your home can affect your health.

What Is Radiation?

Radiation is all around us! In the most basic of terms, radiation is energy.

Atoms make up everything on earth. When an atom is stable, the protons, neutrons, and electrons that make up the atom are balanced. Unstable atoms happen when the protons, neutrons, and electrons inside of an atom are unbalanced.

An unbalanced atom has to get rid of the extra energy somehow. This is where radiation comes into play. The unstable atom releases this extra energy in the form of radiation.

Where Does Radiation Come From?

Cosmic Radiation

Every time you step outside, you are exposed to radiation from our universe called cosmic radiation. The earth’s magnetic shield blocks most of the cosmic radiation from getting to earth, but some can still get through.

The closer you are to space, the greater exposure you have to cosmic radiation. This means that the amount of this type of radiation can vary depending on where you live. The higher the elevation you are, the greater your exposure to cosmic radiation will be.

Whenever you fly in an airplane, you are exposed to more radiation than if you have your feet planted on earth. People who work on airplanes have their cosmic radiation tracked so that exposure doesn’t ever get too high.

Terrestrial Radiation

The earth’s crust is made up of many different elements. When the uranium, potassium, and thorium in the earth’s crust decay, they emit radiation. This type of radiation is found in our water, rocks, soil, and in the materials that our buildings are made out of.

When certain elements in the earth’s crust decay, they release a gas called radon, which is absorbed into the air. Too much radon can cause certain cancers and other ailments, which is why it’s important to test that too much radon isn’t getting trapped in your house.

Man-Made Radiation

Radiation is not just found in nature. Man-made objects can also emit different levels of radiation.

When we think about man-made radiation, medical equipment like X-Rays is usually the first thing that comes to mind. It’s not just these high-powered machines that are responsible for radiation. Many items that we use in our households every day can emit radiation that can have a damaging effect on your health.

Most of the household radiation that you will experience on a day-to-day basis comes in the form of Electric and Magnetic Fields, or EMFs. Anything that uses electricity sends out energy waves during its use. Items like microwaves, cell phones, power lines, and wireless routers all emit EMFs.

Why Is Radiation Harmful?

With so much radiation in our world, it’s important to understand how radiation can be harmful to your well-being. One cause for concern is high-frequency pulsed microwave radiation, which emits radiation that goes beyond the average radiation levels that you should be around. This type of EMF can be found in things like microwaves and WI-Fi routers.

When it comes to radiation, you have to pay attention to how much you are being subjected to. Devices like WI-Fi routers are on all day, so the radiation pulse you are exposed to is constant. When you combine this type of EMF with other types of electronic radiation from devices like laptops, smartphones, and computers, you could end up with radiation that could be having a negative impact on your body.

High EMF levels can cause many serious conditions like cancer or death. Exposure to radiation in high doses can also cause Acute Radiation Syndrome or Cutaneous Radiation Injuries.

Protecting Your Home From Radiation

It’s vital for your health to put safeguards into place for your EMF protection. There are some simple things you can do to limit your EMF exposure.

One thing you can do is to keep your phone on airplane mode when you aren’t using it. Keeping your phone away from your ear and on speaker mode when talking will also help your EMF exposure.

In your house, using a landline can help reduce radiation. You can make it a habit to unplug your electronics before you go to bed. If you want to take it one step further, turn off your bedroom breaker each night to cut the electricity you won’t need while you sleep.

You can also buy an EMF meter to help keep you and your family safe. For whole-house protection, there is even EMF paint to keep EMF radiation out of where you live.

EMF protection can also be fashionable! EMF protection can be found in fabrics. Because windows are a place EMF can enter your home, an EMF blocking fabric curtain would be a great option for additional EMF radiation security.
